Pattern formation in flowing electrorheological fluids.
A two-fluid continuum model is developed to describe mass transport in electro- and magnetorheological suspensions. The particle flux is related to the field-induced stresses. Solutions of the resulting mass balance show column formation in the absence of flow, and stripe formation when a suspension is subjected simultaneously to an applied electric field and shear flow.

Fluids with competing short range attraction and long range repulsive interactions between the particles can exhibit a variety of microphase separated structures. We develop a lattice-gas (generalised Ising) model and analyse the phase diagram using Monte Carlo computer simulations and also with density functional theory (DFT). The DFT predictions for the structures formed are in good agreement...

One of the most interesting phenomena in the soft-matter realm consists in the spontaneous formation of super-molecular structures (microphases) in condition of thermodynamic equilibrium. A simple mechanism responsible for this self-organization or pattern formation is based on the competition between attractive and repulsive forces with different length scales in the microscopic potential, typ...

A viscous ferroliquid is trapped between two narrowly spaced parallel sheets of glass, the Hele-Shaw cell. The ferroliquid lls a cylindrical domain with cross section and the rest of the cell is lled with a uid of negligible viscosity. In absence of any other forces, the eeect of surface tension at the interface between the uids is such that the liquid is at rest if is circular. Starting from t...

Using a thermal-lattice Boltzmann model, we examine the rich phase behavior that develops when partially miscible fluids evolve in the presence of a vertical temperature gradient, which encompasses the critical temperature T(c) of the mixture. In particular, a binary AB fluid is confined between two plates in a gravitational field. The upper plate is fixed below T(c) and hence, the nearby fluid...
